LD Elimination Round Results - Minnesota State Debate Tournament (1991 - 2013)
The Lincoln-Douglas state tournament began as an invitational QUOTEfestival" in the 1986-87 school year. During the four years of the festival, it was held before winter vacation. Beginning in 1991, the festival was elevated by the MSHSL to a full tournament with qualification similar to that of policy debate. At this point, the tournament moved to January and was held concurrently with the policy tournament.
Like policy at that time, the LD tournament had 24 qualifiers, with 4 debaters from each of 6 sections. No school could enter more than two debaters. Unlike policy, the LD tournament has never held an octafinal round, which has allowed for six preliminary rounds since 1991.
The only major change in the format of the tournament occurred in 2009, when the number of sections dropped from 6 to 4. At this time, the number of qualifiers in each section climbed from 4 to 6 to maintain a total of 24 qualifiers.
